INNOVATIONS FOR SUSTAINABILITY

We are pleased to announce the PhD symposium 2019 scheduled for 10th & 11th October 2019 to be held at IHE Delft, Institute for Water Education.
This symposium will provide a unique opportunity for PhD fellows/students to present their research to the IHE community.

The theme for the 2019 PhD symposium is “Innovations for Sustainability”.
SDGs cannot be achieved without new ways to respond to the interrelated environmental, societal, and economic challenges we are facing today.
Overcoming these challenges requires us to think of innovative and smarter solutions that can have a positive impact on sustainable development.

We welcome presentations corresponding to this theme and with special focus on water and climate change-related challenges.
With the goal of integrating the PhD community, we also welcome a certain number of presentations from external PhD students on relevant topics.

Prof.dr.Ir. Charlotte de Fraiture

Charlotte de Fraiture has over 20 years of international working experience in the field of water management for agriculture. Since 2018 Charlotte is a member of the Rectorate as Vice Rector Academic & Student Affairs of IHE Delft.
During the first five years of her career, she was involved in implementation and management of irrigation and rural development projects in Senegal and Nepal. She worked for the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) from 1996 to 2011 based in Colombia, Sri Lanka, Ghana and Burkina Faso. She was involved in several research projects related to watershed development, irrigation performance, irrigation management transfer and modeling of global water supply and demand, leading the development and application of the global water and food model. This model was applied for global future scenarios on water, food and the environment as part of the Comprehensive Assessment on Water Management in Agriculture. She was project leader of several research projects, among others a large BMGF funded project on identifying promising options for smallholder water management in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Zambia and India. Besides research she fulfilled several management tasks, being Head of Office of the West-Africa office, Theme Leader and Group Head. Since January 2012 she joined IHE Delft as professor of Land and Water Development.

She holds a PhD in Civil Engineering (specialization Water Resources Management) from the University of Colorado in Boulder-USA, a MA in economics from the University of Colorado in Boulder-USA and a MSc in irrigation water engineering from Wageningen University, the Netherlands.

Prof. dr. ir. Nick van de Giesen

Since July 2004, Nick van de Giesen has held the Van Kuffeler Chair of Water Resources Management of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. He teaches Integrated Water Resources Management (CIE4450) and Water Management (CTB2120). His main interests are measuring and modeling of complex water resources systems and the development of science-based decision support systems. Development of new observation techniques, both in situ and through satellites, as well as High Performance Computing, are the core themes of both research portfolio and teaching curriculum. Since 1 January 2015, he is chairman of the Delft Global Initiative.

Dr. Arthur Lutz

Dr. A.F. (Arthur) Lutz is a physical geographer with a solid background in hydrology, hydrological modelling, GIS, remote sensing and cryospheric sciences. His expertises include hydrological modelling at scales ranging from large river basins to small catchments, climate change impacts for future water resources, simulation models, data analysis, hydro-meteorological monitoring in the field, and training. Particular focus of his work is on the modelling of climate change impacts for high-mountain hydrology. He is mainly educated at Utrecht University, where he completed his Bachelor and Master degree in physical geography. His education focused on land-surface hydrology, land degradation and catchment modelling, remote sensing, and spatial analysis. Besides, he focused on the cryospheric environment by attending specialization courses in glaciology, permafrost & periglacial environments at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), and did an internship in the cryospheric research group at the University of Zurich. Arthur worked for several years as a consultant and GIS-specialist, before joining FutureWater in 2011. He has international working experience in multiple developing countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa. He is author and co-author of multiple peer-reviewed publications. Between 2012 and 2016 he conducted a combined PhD research at FutureWater and Utrecht University resulting in his PhD thesis titled “Impact of climate change on the hydrology of High Mountain Asia”.

F.J.C. Smits, M.Sc.

Frank started his career with five years at Witteveen+Bos Consulting Engineers in Deventer, both in the surface water group and the groundwater group. He did many projects in the Netherlands, for example related to the widening of the river Maas near the city of Maastricht or the testing of a new dredging technique by Boskalis in the lake Ketelmeer. He worked also abroad, for example in Estonia and several countries in Central Europe, mostly in projects commissioned by the European Union.

Since 2007 Frank has worked as a researcher at Waternet. This is the merged oranisation of the waterboard Amstel, Gooi and Vecht, the Service for Surface Water and Sewerage Management of the city of Amsterdam, and the Amsterdam Water Supply. Waternet is the first and only governmental organisation in the Netherlands that manages the complete cycle of surface water, groundwater, drinking water, the sewerage system and wastewater. Waternet, started in 2006, is a relative young organisation, but its roots date back to 1307 when the oldest predecessor of the waterboard officially was founded, and to 1851 when the Amsterdam Water Supply started. Half of his time Frank spends as a resource hydrologist at the water supply part of Waternet, the other half is partioned between the rural and urban watermanagement.

Frank is also involved in several projects for World Waternet, for example in Surinam and Marocco, and for the Technical University of Delft in Romania.

Besides his work for Waternet, Frank is doing a PhD in TU Delft about the reduction of brackish seepage.
